Wallpaper Print. This piece was influenced by a text by Mitsuye Yamada titled "Invisibility is an Unnatural Disaster: Reflections of an Asian American Woman." In recounting several of her past experiences, she established that in remaining silent in the presence of racist remarks, she rendered herself invisible and fed into the stereotype of women being docile bodies that aren't really listened to and who remain in the background. In using an aesthetically pleasing palette and imagery that is flowery and feminine, I reinforce stereotypical female values and attributes. In this piece, I also juxtapose the idea of being a wallflower and being invisible with a wallpaper design that is bright, colorful, and hard to miss. In a room covered with this print, it would be difficult to not be heard and not drawn in.
